Our services We are a family-run general building company based in Northamptonshire with backgrounds in carpentry, brickwork, and groundwork. We have many years of experience in all aspects of building maintenance, extensions, conversions, kitchens, and bathrooms. We are fully insured and have an outstanding team of quality craftsmen offering our clients a bespoke service tailored to each individual client. We pride ourselves on our ability to work with deadlines and keeping within budget. At Bannister Builders Ltd, we pay attention to every detail and understand that it’s your home, not just a building site and we always strive to ensure the minimum of disruption to your daily routine throughout the work that we carry out for you. Meet the team… Who are we? Luke Company Owner Luke has over 20 years in the building industry. He has taken over from his father, Martin, who has recently retired, and he is your point of contact for inquiries and advice. Luke is a family-oriented man, with a busy life outside of work, and two energetic children! He’s recently taken up motorbikes as a hobby and enjoys going to the gym during downtime. Sam (Noddy) Project manager Sam is the brother-in-law of Luke and is a key member of the team. As we have two Sam’s on the team, he is often called ‘Noddy’. As well as managing jobs, he is extremely skilled in many aspects of general building. Sam’s a carpenter by trade, however, he can turn his hand to most jobs. Sam’s a father to three boys and is kept very busy with a big social life outside of work. He has an obsession with football and is the only sport-loving member on the team. Steve Team Leader Steve is a team leader at Bannister Builders. He’s a highly skilled carpenter and knowledgeable in all areas and really takes on the job at hand. He’s been with the firm a good few years now and has become part of the furniture. Steve is a caring reliable kind of guy. He’s a family man with two children, an enjoyer of single malt whiskeys, and is a capable musician. Nick Plumbing and heating Nick’s main speciality is plumbing and heating, and he’s responsible for all our bathrooms and heating, as well as being very knowledgeable in all areas of building and carpentry. Nick’s an incredibly caring person, and very helpful, and this is often shown in the quality of his work. He’s a chatty chap who loves a good whistle and sing along, with a particular guilty pleasure for Westlife music. Sam (B) Carpenter and multi-skilled Sam “B” is our carpenter and a highly skilled “multi trader”. He’s trustworthy, diligent in his work, and has an amazing eye for detail. Sam keeps a cool head under pressure and he’s a great asset to our growing team. Sam drives a postman pat type van and enjoys the gym and eating protein-based meals. He’s a keen cook and is known to make a lovely cake on occasions. David Logistics David is our logistics man. He’s a well-spoken trustworthy chap who is a man-mountain and a great asset to the company. He’s caring and will take on any challenge with a great attitude. David has a lovely singing voice and is a one-man encyclopedia. He is the “baby” brother of Steve, and (some might say) arguably the better looking… Ben Project manager/Digger driver Ben is a man of many talents his capability to deliver under pressure is a great asset to our team. He has a background in the builders merchant sector and is our in-house digger driver and project manager. In his spare time, Ben enjoys a spot of cricket and is kept occupied with a wife and three children. A little-known fact about Ben is that he is also a talented musician. Honor Admin Honor is our admin with the arduous task of keeping everything in order. She assists Luke in the running of the company and is the behind the scene’s star of the show. Honor is very much “part of the family” – literally – she is the wife of Sam and the sister of Luke. Honor is quick-witted and hardworking, she’s a mother of three boys (well four if you count Sam) and is kept very busy looking after them all.

Frequently Asked Questions About Excavation Contractors

Need help with an excavation project? Find answers to common questions about excavation contractors and hiring excavation services in UK.

What is cut and fill excavation?

Cut and fill excavation is a technique where soil from higher areas of the site (cut) is used to fill lower areas (fill), achieving a desired grade or elevation. It minimizes the need to import or export soil, reducing costs and environmental impact.

Do I need a permit for excavation?

Excavation permits are often required, especially for larger projects or those involving utility lines. Permits ensure the work is performed safely and complies with local regulations. Your excavation contractor can usually handle permit applications, but it's essential to confirm this and ensure they obtain the necessary permits before starting work.

How do you calculate excavation volume?

Calculating excavation volume is essential for determining material quantities and disposal costs. The method depends on the shape of the excavation:
  • Rectangular Excavation: Volume = Length x Width x Depth
  • Triangular Excavation: Volume = (0.5 x Base x Height) x Length
  • Irregular Shapes: May require breaking the excavation into smaller, simpler shapes and calculating their volumes separately.
Online calculators or software can assist with complex calculations.

What is the purpose of compaction in excavation?

Compaction involves using heavy rollers or other machinery to compress the soil or fill material, increasing its density and stability. Compaction is essential for:
  • Supporting Structures: Compacted soil provides a stable base for foundations, roads, and other structures.
  • Preventing Settling: Compaction minimizes the risk of the ground settling unevenly over time.
  • Improving Drainage: Compacted soil improves drainage, reducing waterlogging and erosion.
