This is a permanent repair and does not have to be repeated. Unlike other surface repairs, the injected polymers are not exposed to weathering, traffic, or ultraviolet rays. Most importantly, injection of the cracks will prevent expensive repairs and problems in the future. Potential damage done by water leaks to the finished basement or cost of repairing concrete walls caused by corrosion show the clear advantages of permanent crack repair. Injection is the best repair of poured concrete walls. POLYURETHANE INJECTION Polyurethane is especially formulated for concrete repair, expanding upon contact with special liquid to fill the crack. As the foundation continues to shift, the polyurethane remains flexible, thus stopping the leak permanently. Foundation Concrete Crack Repair is done from the inside, making digging from the outside unnecessary. Holes are drilled along the crack through the soil and polyurethane is then injected. EPOXY INJECTION Epoxy Injection is recommended only for structural purpose, and even then only if the concrete is dry. HOW FOUNDATION CRACKS DEVELOP Cracks can be found in almost all residential foundations. Often, they will occur in corners of windows, pour lines, holes for service lines or rod ties. The various causes include: HIGH WATER CONTENT RESULTING IN POOR CONCRETE MIX RAPID CURING OF CONCRETE CONCRETE FORMS REMOVED PREMATURELY (I.E. 2 DAYS VS 7) FILL SOIL BEING IMPROPERLY COMPACTED UNEVEN MOISTURE AROUND THE FOUNDATION POOR DRAINAGE HYDRO-STATIC WATER PRESSURE All houses will settle, but because soil properties vary, not every point on a foundation will settle uniformly, thus causing cracking walls and racking door frames. Good construction will minimize overall settlement and prevent differential settlement. In time, even small cracks will grow larger and can cause BIG problems like loss of structural integrity. All cracks that may be or are exposed to moisture need to be repaired as quickly as possible to avoid extensive damage. TYPES OF BASEMENT CRACKS HAIRLINE CRACKS Most foundation cracks will appear within the first year of being built. Common wall cracks do not pose any structural concerns, or failure of foundation. The biggest problem with these, is water leakage. VERTICAL CRACKS Typical foundation cracks run vertically or at an angle, this is caused by the shrinking of the concrete as it cures, this is true with settlement. HORIZONTAL CRACKS If the crack is at the mid point of the wall, it is subject to lateral pressure, causing the wall to bow and damage the wall structurally. Cracks more than 1/4” wide, horizontal cracks, cracks with misaligned edges or continued movement may require an engineer assessment. Monitor the cracks length and movement by marking the ends of the crack and making alignment marks at various points on the wall.

Our Story DeFord Contracting has a rich history dating back to 1967 when Tony DeFord began working for Ed Federation Transport. He learned the trade working on a single-axle GMC truck and a 1010 John Deere Loader, primarily focusing on excavation services. Tony's dedication and hard work allowed him to master the craft. In 1970, Tony took a bold step and bought out Ed Federation, becoming the sole owner of DeFord Contracting. The business operated from his home in the Meadowlark community, with his wife Sylvia handling bookkeeping and dispatch duties. Tony operated the loader and hauled dirt from excavation sites, often sharing the cab with his young son Carey. The oil and housing booms of the 1970s and 1980s, coupled with securing the contract to excavate West Edmonton Mall, propelled DeFord's rapid rise to success. DeFord Contracting has since worked on some of Edmonton's most significant projects, transforming the city's landscape while expanding its workforce, equipment inventory, and service offerings to keep pace with growth. DeFord Timeline EST'D 1967 Tony DeFord signs on to work for Ed Federation Transport 1968 The business is renamed to Federation & DeFord 1970 Tony DeFord buys Ed Federation Transport and becomes the sole owner of the company, operating out of his home 1970s DeFord is involved in the development of the first phase of the new suburban community of Mill Woods 1974 The company moves to its new office at 110th Avenue and 164th Street 1975 DeFord's involvement in the North Town Centre (North Town Mall) development laid the groundwork for long-term success 1980s DeFord receives a contract to excavate the site for West Edmonton Mall DeFord digs out the route for Edmonton Transit's LRT line through downtown 1990 DeFord becomes involved in much larger projects, including the downtown Grant MacEwan University campus 1999 DeFord Contracting begins doing Paving work 2005 The River Cree Resort and Casino is erected on a site prepared by DeFord Contracting, securing major road and interchange work realigning 79 ave, Winterburn Road and the entrance to River Cree. 2006 Procurement of work and larger-scale jobs drives the need to increase the capacity of the Base works and Paving divisions. New paving, motor graders, loaders and compaction equipment are purchased.
